Celebrate achievements with star-shaped cookies that shine for all.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 3 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • About 12 craft sticks (flat wooden sticks with round ends)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons hot water
  • Betty Crocker™ decorating icing (from 4.25-oz tube), if desired
  • Assorted candies and Betty Crocker™ assorted candy sprinkles and sugars, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 325°F. In a large bowl, blend granulated sugar, shortening, butter, lemon peel, and egg using an electric mixer on medium speed or mix with a spoon. Add flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix until combined.
  • Roll out half of the dough at a time to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Use a 6- to 8-inch star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes, or make a cardboard star pattern and cut around it with a knife. Place the cutouts 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and insert a craft stick 1 inch into the side of each cookie.
  • Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until lightly golden. Allow to cool briefly, then transfer from baking sheet to cooling rack. Let cool completely for about 30 minutes.
  • Combine all glaze ingredients in a small bowl until smooth and at a drizzling consistency. Spread the glaze over the cookies and decorate to your heart's content with icing and candies.
