Savory Swedish meatballs made with seasoned beef and pork, baked to perfection, and smothered in rich sour cream gravy - a cozy and delicious family favorite.
Ingredients:
  • 2 slices day-old white bread, crumbled
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 0.66666668653488 pound ground beef
  • 0.33333334326744 pound finely ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.25 cup chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, or as needed
  • 2 cups beef broth, or as needed
  • 0.5 (8 ounce) container sour cream
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Combine bread crumbs and cream in a small bowl; let sit until crumbs have soaked up the cream, approximately 10 minutes.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 teaspoon of butter and cook the onion until light brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer the caramelized onion to a mixing bowl.
  • Combine ground beef, ground pork, egg, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger with onion in a mixing bowl. Gently fold in bread crumbs and cream.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Take about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the meat mixture per meatball and shape into balls. Place the meatballs in the skillet and cook until browned all over, about 5 minutes, ensuring the insides remain slightly pink.
  • Transfer the golden meatballs to a baking dish, then generously pour over the flavorful chicken broth before covering with foil.
  • Once meatballs are tender, after about 40 minutes in the preheated oven, transfer them to a serving dish.
  • Transfer the flavorful pan drippings to a saucepan set over medium heat, then skillfully whisk in the flour until it forms a smooth mixture.
  • Slowly pour in just the right amount of rich beef broth, totaling 2 1/2 cups of liquid, as you whisk continuously.
  • Simmer gravy, whisking constantly, until it thickens, for around 5 minutes.
  • Before serving, gently whisk in the sour cream and season the gravy with a touch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Accompany the meatballs with the luscious gravy.
