Slow cooker apple butter recipe, perfect for gifting.
Ingredients:
  • 20 small apples -- peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions:
  • Combine apples, sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and cloves in a slow cooker and gently mix.
  • Cook the mixture on High for 1 hour. Reduce heat to Low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and dark brown, 9 to 11 hours. Uncover and cook on Low, whisking occasionally, until smooth, about 1 hour.
  • Boil jars and lids for at least 5 minutes to sterilize. Fill hot jars with apple butter leaving 1/4 inch from the top. Remove air bubbles by running a knife around the inside of the jars. Wipe rims with a moist paper towel to clean. Secure with lids and rings.
  • Fill a large stockpot halfway with water and bring it to a boil. Use a jar holder to carefully lower jars onto a rack placed in the pot, ensuring a 2-inch space between them. If needed, add more boiling water to ensure jars are covered by at least 1 inch of water. Cover the pot, bring the water back to a boil, and process for 10 minutes.
  • Take the jars out of the stockpot and place them on a cloth-covered or wooden surface, several inches apart, to cool. Once cool, press the top of each lid with a finger to make sure the seal is tight (lid does not move up or down). Store in a cool, dark area.
