Classic apple cobbler with a timeless appeal, passed down through generations.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2.5 tablespoons shortening
  • 0.75 cup milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Give your 9-inch square baking dish a quick grease. Arrange the sliced apples evenly in the dish.
  • Combine brown sugar and 1/4 cup flour in a saucepan. Stir in vinegar and water until sugar has dissolved and mixture is well blended. Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens for about 3 minutes. Remove from heat, cool for 10 minutes, then add vanilla extract and butter. Pour over apple slices in pan.
  • Combine 1 cup of flour with baking powder in a bowl, stirring until smooth. Add shortening and mix until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs. Gently incorporate milk and spread batter over the apples and syrup.
  • Bake in the oven until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender, approximately 35 minutes.
