Chef John's Tiramisu Toast: A quick, easy, and indulgent twist on a classic dessert in a single-serving size.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons strongly brewed espresso
  • 0.25 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 (1 inch thick) slices day-old Italian bread
  • 3 tablespoons dry Marsala wine
  • 0.5 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 tiny pinch salt
Instructions:
  • Collect all the required ingredients. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and prepare a baking pan by lining it with aluminum foil.
  • In a baking dish, gently crack an egg and add white sugar, espresso, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. Place bread slices in the dish and coat evenly with the mixture. Allow the bread to soak for 10 to 15 minutes to absorb all the flavors.
  • Place the bread slices in the pan and generously drizzle with the flavorful coffee mixture.
  • Bake the toast in the center of the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes until the custard is cooked and the bread bounces back slightly when touched. Then, transfer the slices to a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
  • Pour a generous amount of wine into a saucepan and sprinkle in some sugar. Cook over medium heat until the liquid is reduced to a concentrated tablespoon. Take off the heat and allow it to cool down.
  • In a bowl, combine mascarpone cheese with cooled wine reduction and a tiny pinch of salt. Stir well with a spatula until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to pipe or spread on cooled toast. Garnish with shaved chocolate before serving.
