Savory French Canadian meat pie with seasoned pork, mashed potatoes, and onions in flaky pastry crust.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large baking potato
  • 1.5 pounds ground pork
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch ground allspice
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 (14.1 ounce) package double-crust pie pastry, thawed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 0.25 teaspoon paprika, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Pierce the potato all over with a fork and place it on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until tender, for 50-60 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes, then remove the skin and mash the flesh. Turn off the oven.
  • Combine mashed potato with ground pork, onion, water, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice in a large skillet. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat until very thick, for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) to get it ready for baking.
  • Place a pastry in a deep-dish pie plate. Fill with pork and potato mixture, top with the second pastry, brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with paprika, and cut a steam vent in the pastry.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes, covering the edges with foil if they brown too fast. Serve warm.
