Indulge in the ultimate French bread pizza, perfect for any meal or snack.
Ingredients:
  • 1 loaf French bread (about 14 ounces)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for finishing
  • 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes (about 1/2 a 14-ounce can)
  • 2 cloves garlic, 1 finely grated and 1 whole
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 4 1/2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 sprig fresh Italian basil
Instructions:
  • Prepare the bread: Preheat the top rack of your oven to high broil and the center rack. Flatten the loaf by pressing it with your hands, then slice it in half lengthwise and across. Place the 4 pieces on a baking sheet. Spread butter and drizzle half the olive oil over the bread. Broil until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove and set aside. Turn off the broiler and preheat the oven to 450°F.
  • For the toppings, combine crushed tomatoes, grated garlic, oregano, chili flakes, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Tear the mozzarella cheese into large pieces and set aside the basil leaves after removing them from the stem.
  • Top the pizzas: Gently rub the cut side of each piece of toasted bread with a whole garlic clove. Spoon 2 to 4 tablespoons of tomato sauce onto each piece, according to your sauciness preference. Evenly distribute the mozzarella cheese on top of the pizzas and finish with a final drizzle of olive oil.
  • Bake at 450°F on the center rack until the cheese is melted and slightly browned, about 8-10 minutes. For an extra crispy finish, give them a quick blast under the broiler on the top rack, watching closely to avoid burning the bread.
  • To serve, adjust seasoning with salt as desired, then allow to cool briefly before adding fresh basil leaves. Slice into portions and serve. Any remaining portions can be tightly wrapped in foil and refrigerated for up to 2 days. Reheat in a preheated 400°F oven for approximately 8 minutes until heated through. Enjoy the dish?
