Delicious homemade vanilla sheet cake competes with the classic chocolate version.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and generously coat a 15x10x1-inch pan with cooking spray.
  • Combine flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, sour cream, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until smooth and well blended.
  • In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of butter and water to a boil. Combine with the flour mixture, then fold in the egg mixture. Transfer the batter to the baking pan.
  • Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the edges turn golden and the center springs back when lightly touched.
  • In a 2-quart saucepan, bring 1/2 cup of butter and milk to a boil. Remove from heat and gradually add powdered sugar, stirring until smooth. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla and chopped walnuts. Pour over warm cake and let cool for approximately 1 hour before cutting.
