Enhance the almond flavor by swapping out vanilla extract for almond extract.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 9 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 0.5 cup chopped almonds
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and generously grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine shortening, white sugar, and brown sugar until creamy. Add egg yolk and vanilla, mixing until well combined. Gradually incorporate the flour until well blended. The mixture will become stiff.
  • Evenly spread the dough in the baking pan. Bake until the top turns a beautiful golden brown, approximately 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Gently melt the chocolate in a double boiler on low heat. Spread the smooth chocolate over the warm crust, sprinkle with almonds, and allow it to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
