Delicious apple, walnut, raisin, and cinnamon filling wrapped in thin, homemade dough.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lard, melted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1.5 cups butter, melted
  • 1 cup toasted bread crumbs
  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • 3.5 pounds apples - peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 0.75 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1.75 cups white sugar
Instructions:
  • Sift the all-purpose flour into a large bowl. Combine with egg, water, white sugar, lard, and salt until dough is soft and smooth. Lightly brush with about 1 tablespoon of butter, cover with a towel, and let it rest for 1 hour.
  • Combine 3/4 cup of butter with bread crumbs in a medium bowl. Stir in ground walnuts, apples, raisins, cinnamon, and sugar.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and generously butter a medium baking dish.
  • Place a fresh tablecloth or cotton sheet on a spacious work surface and sprinkle flour evenly. Delicately stretch the dough into a thin, large rectangle resembling tissue paper. Trim any thick edges. Drizzle around 1/2 cup of melted butter. Evenly distribute the bread crumb mixture over the dough, keeping a two-inch border. Fold one end over the filling, then roll to create a strudel shape. Cut to fit the baking dish.
  • Transfer the strudel to a baking dish. Brush it with the remaining butter. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and the apples are tender, approximately 1 hour.
