French apple pie baked upside-down in skillet for caramelized perfection - Tarte Tatin.
Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 large Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust (see footnote for recipe link)
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Prepare the skillet by generously coating it with butter, then evenly sprinkle sugar on top.
  • Arrange apple quarters with their rounded sides facing down in a circular pattern on top of the butter and sugar.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves and starts to caramelize. Keep cooking until the apples soften and the caramel begins to brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Then, remove from the heat.
  • Dust work surface with flour, roll pie dough into an 11-inch circle, and pinch edge to create a decorative ruffle around the crust.
  • Lay the crust over the apples and neatly tuck the edges around them.
  • Bake until the crust is beautifully golden for around 20 minutes. Let it cool for 5 minutes. Cover the pan with a plate, carefully flip it to release the tart, and scrape any leftover apples back onto the crust.
