Hearty British comfort dish - reminiscent of grandma's cooking on cold days.
Ingredients:
  • 8 large baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 teaspoons butter, divided
  • 0.5 cup milk, or as needed
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1.5 pounds beef sausage
  • 0.5 cup diced onion
  • 1 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
  • 1 cup water, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Boil potatoes in water until tender for about 20 minutes. Drain and mash with 1 teaspoon of butter, adding milk to reach desired creaminess. Mix until smooth with an electric mixer or continue mashing. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Heat the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until heated through, then set aside. In the same skillet, add a teaspoon of butter and sauté the onions until tender. Prepare the gravy mix with water according to package instructions, and pour it into the skillet with the onions. Cook and stir continuously over medium heat until a thick gravy forms.
  • Spread half of the luscious gravy on the bottom of a square casserole dish. Layer the sausages on top of the gravy (you can butterfly them for an elegant touch). Drizzle the rest of the savory gravy over the sausages, then crown them with creamy mashed potatoes. Bon appétit!
  • Place the dish in the oven without covering it, let it bake for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown all over.
