Easy Irish soda bread with simple ingredients like flour, baking soda, buttermilk, and caraway seeds - no mixer required!
Ingredients:
  • 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour (1 pound)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick) room temp
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F. Combine flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and caraway seeds in a large bowl, and whisk together.
  • Combine the dry ingredients: Use a large bowl to whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and caraway seeds.
  • Incorporate the butter: Use your fingers or a fork to mix the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse meal.
  • Pour the buttermilk into a well in the center of the flour. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, gently fold and mix until just combined. Adjust the dough by adding more buttermilk if too dry or flour if too wet. Roughly shape into a ball on a floured surface, then lightly knead to form a round loaf. Avoid over-kneading to keep the bread tender.
  • Score the dough by placing the loaf on a lightly greased baking sheet or cast iron pan. Make 1 1/2-inch deep cuts in a cross pattern from side to side on the loaf to allow heat to penetrate the center while baking.
  • Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 400°F and bake for an additional 25 minutes. To test for doneness, tap the bottom - it should sound hollow, or insert a skewer in the center.
  • Allow the bread to cool on the baking sheet for 5 to 10 minutes before transferring it to a rack to cool further. Enjoy the bread while it's still warm and freshly baked for the best taste. Feel free to share your feedback and rating on the recipe!
