Revamped grandma's bran bread with frosted wheat cereal for a tasty twist!
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup bite size frosted wheat cereal
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 cups bread flour
Instructions:
  • Combine the cereal, brown sugar, shortening, and salt in a large bowl. Pour the boiling mixture over the ingredients and allow it to cool to room temperature.
  • Combine yeast with warm water in a small bowl. Allow it to rest until creamy, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Mix the cereal and yeast together. Add eggs and 2 cups of flour; mix thoroughly. Incorporate the rest of the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Once the dough comes together, place it on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic for about 8 minutes.
  • Oil a large bowl, add the dough, and coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, around 1 hour.
  • After punching down the dough, transfer it to a floured surface. Split the dough into two portions and shape them into loaves. Put the loaves in two greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Cover them with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled, which takes about 40 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place in a preheated oven and bake until golden brown, approximately 30 minutes. Then, take out of the pans and allow to cool on a wire rack.
