Classic shredded cereal with rich molasses for a nutty and nostalgic dish.
Ingredients:
  • 2.25 cups boiling water
  • 3 large shredded wheat cereal biscuits
  • 2 teaspoons shortening
  • 0.5 cup molasses
  • 1 (0.6 ounce) cake compressed fresh yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 8.25 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions:
  • Pour boiling water over biscuits in a large bowl, then stir in salt, shortening, and molasses. Allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm.
  • In a small bowl, mix yeast with warm water, then add it to the lukewarm biscuit mixture. Stir in flour gradually, beating well after each addition. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth for about 8 minutes. Place the dough in a large bowl coated with oil, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 2 hours.
  • After deflating the dough, gently shape it into three equal portions and mold them into loaves. Transfer the loaves into two lightly greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Brush the tops with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, approximately 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) in the meantime.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 45 minutes until the bottom of the loaves sounds hollow when tapped.
