Create fun whirligig-shaped cookies for kids using sugar cookie dough and colorful gumdrops for a delicious and playful treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1 roll (16.5oz) refrigerated sugar cookie dough
  • 18 flat wooden sticks with rounded ends
  • 9 small gumdrops (cut in half crosswise)
  • Red and/or green sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 F. Take half of the cookie dough out of the wrapper and keep the rest refrigerated. Roll out half of the dough on a lightly floured surface into a 9-inch square and then cut it into 9 (3-inch) squares. Place them on an ungreased large cookie sheet.
  • Cut each square from each corner almost to the center, leaving about 1 inch uncut in the center using a sharp knife or fluted pastry wheel. Place a wooden stick on each square with one end in the center. Fold alternate corners over, pressing in the center. Place a gumdrop half in the center to resemble a button and sprinkle whirligigs with red and/or green sugar. Repeat with the remaining half of the dough.
  • Bake the cookies for 9 to 11 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Let them cool for 1 minute before transferring to wire racks. Allow them to cool completely, approximately 15 minutes.
