Savory pork meatballs cooked with potatoes in a flavorful, thick gravy.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 pounds ground pork
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 0.5 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 6 cups reduced sodium chicken broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 0.25 cup cold water
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 potatoes, peeled and cubed
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and generously dust a baking sheet with flour.
  • Bake flour in a preheated oven until golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning. Transfer the flour to a shallow bowl as soon as it reaches the desired color and let it cool.
  • In a large, heavy pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Cook and stir the onion until translucent, about 5 minutes. Transfer the onion to a large mixing bowl. In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; mix the spice blend into the onion. Add ground pork, parsley, egg, and bread crumbs to the bowl, and thoroughly combine. Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs, then coat each meatball in the roasted flour. Keep any leftover flour for later use.
  • In a pot, bring chicken broth to a boil over medium heat. Gently place the meatballs into the pot, stirring to prevent sticking. Add the bay leaf and simmer the meatballs for 20 minutes. Then add potatoes and continue simmering until tender and the broth has thickened, about 20 more minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the meatballs to a bowl.
  • Discard the bay leaf. Combine the remaining roasted flour and cold water in a cup. Slowly whisk the flour mixture into the simmering broth to thicken. Bring the stew to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  • Season the dish to perfection with a touch of salt and black pepper, then add the meatballs back into the stew before serving.
