A healthier twist on grandma's classic apple pie - just as delicious with less sugar and butter.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 (14.1 ounce) package double-crust pie pastry, thawed
  • 8 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in flour to create a paste and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant. Add brown sugar and water, then bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Line the 9-inch pie pan with one pastry, ensuring it covers the bottom and sides. Roll out the second pastry to extend over the pie by about 1/2 inch, then cut it into eight 1-inch strips.
  • Arrange the sliced apples in the bottom crust to create a gentle mound. Next, lay four pastry strips vertically over the apples, making sure they are evenly spaced with longer strips in the center and shorter ones at the edges.
  • Create an intricate lattice crust design: Gently fold the first and third strips fully back on themselves, almost hanging off the pie. Place an unused strip perpendicular over the second and fourth strips, and then unfold the first and third strips to their starting position.
  • Fold the second and fourth vertical strips back. Place one of the three remaining strips horizontally on top. Unfold the second and fourth strips back into place.
  • Continue weaving in the remaining two pastry strips, folding and trimming excess dough at the edges as needed, then pinch to secure everything in place.
  • Pour the sugar mixture delicately over the lattice crust, allowing it to flow over the sliced apples. Lightly brush some onto the lattice, ensuring it stays within the edges.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes. Then lower the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes until the apples are soft.
