Delightful cake mix dessert topped with fun candy - a kids' favorite!
Ingredients:
  • 2 boxes Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Devil's Food Cake Mix or 2 boxes Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix boxes
  • 2 tubs (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Chocolate Frosting
  • 1/4 cup from 1 tub (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • 6 Oreo chocolate creme sandwich cookies
  • 8 candy-coated peanut butter pieces (6 brown, 2 orange)
  • 4 banana-shaped hard candies
  • 2 banana stretchy and tangy taffy candies (from 6-oz bag)
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease a 1 1/2-quart ovenproof bowl (8 inches across the top) and two 8-inch round cake pans with shortening, then coat them with flour (avoid using cooking spray). Place paper baking cups in 2 regular-size muffin cups.
  • Prepare the cake mixes in a large bowl according to the package instructions. Pour 3 3/4 cups of batter into a 1 1/2-quart bowl, distribute 2 1/2 cups of batter into each cake pan, and fill two-thirds full the two muffin cups with the remaining batter. Remember not to make more than 2 boxes of cake batter and to avoid extending the beating time.
  • For perfect results, bake the muffin pan for 17 to 21 minutes, the cake pans for 23 to 30 minutes, and the bowl for 47 to 53 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool for 10 minutes then remove them from the pans and bowl, placing the rounded sides up on cooling racks. Cool completely for about 1 hour. For easier slicing, freeze the cakes for 45 minutes beforehand to reduce crumbs. Trim off any rounded tops if needed.
  • Place the 8-inch cake on a serving plate and spread 1/3 cup of chocolate frosting over the top. Add the second cake layer on top with the cut side down. Then, use the photo as a guide to cut the remaining 8-inch cake into an owl's head and wings. Insert 2 skewers through the cake layers at the ears to keep the head upright and attach the cut wing shapes to the body. Finally, spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting over the sides and top of the layered cake to seal in the crumbs. Freeze the cake for 30 to 45 minutes to set the frosting.
  • Combine 1/4 cup vanilla frosting with 2 tablespoons chocolate frosting in a small bowl to create a light brown mixture. Smooth over the belly area of the owl cake using downward strokes to achieve a ruffled appearance. Separate creme-filled chocolate cookies and keep the creme side. Place 2 cookies on the cake as eyes and add 1 brown peanut butter candy on each as the pupil. Position banana-shaped hard candies at the base for feet. Flatten banana-shaped taffy, cut into 2 large triangles, and attach to the owl's face as the beak.
  • For baby owl cupcakes: Frost each cupcake with chocolate frosting, creating cute peaks for horns. Place 2 chocolate cookies on top for eyes and add 1 brown peanut butter candy to each as a pupil. Attach an orange peanut butter candy as the nose. Remember to take out the toothpicks before serving, and store them loosely covered.
