Authentic country-fried steak served with creamy mashed potatoes and sweet peas for a comforting, satisfying meal.
Ingredients:
  • 0.66666668653488 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1.5 cups crushed saltine crackers
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 (5 ounce) beef cube steaks
  • 0.25 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup minced onion
  • 2.75 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
  • For the steaks: Combine milk and eggs in a bowl. In another bowl, mix crackers, flour, and salt together.
  • Coat each steak in the creamy egg mixture, then generously cover with the crispy cracker mixture, ensuring an even coating by pressing gently.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, heat vegetable oil. Fry coated steaks until golden brown on each side, about 6 minutes per side. Ensure the center reaches 140°F (60°C) with an instant-read thermometer. Transfer the cooked steaks to a serving platter, keeping the drippings in the skillet.
  • Create the gravy by stirring flour into the steak drippings until dissolved and pasty, for about 3 to 4 minutes. Sauté onion until evenly coated, for about 2 to 3 minutes. Pour in milk and stir until smooth and thickened, which should take around 5 minutes. Add oil and cook until gravy is boiling, for about 1 minute. Season with salt and black pepper. Serve the gravy alongside the steak.
