Delicious Chinese steamed buns, great with hot soy milk for breakfast.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons white sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
Instructions:
  • Sprinkle yeast over 1 cup of warm water in a large bowl, ensuring the water is no more than 100 degrees F (40 degrees C). Allow it to sit for 5 minutes until the yeast softens and creamy foam forms. Combine flour, sugar, and baking soda in a small bowl. Stir half of the flour mixture into the yeast mixture until no dry spots remain. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, approximately 15 minutes.
  • Oil a large bowl, add the dough, and coat with oil. Cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place (80 to 95 degrees F (27 to 35 degrees C)) until doubled in volume, for about 1 hour. Divide dough into 6 pieces and shape into rounds.
  • Prepare a steamer with water, cover, and bring to a boil. Steam the buns for 20 minutes. Serve hot.
