Festive Christmas sugar cookies with tangy sour cream and rich butter frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.33333334326744 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk, or more as needed
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, cream together white sugar and 1 cup of butter using an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in sour cream and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract until combined.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl. Mix in the sour cream mixture until well combined. Refrigerate the bowl, covered with plastic wrap, for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and lightly grease 2 baking sheets.
  • Flatten cookie dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 3-inch round shapes and transfer to baking sheets.
  • Bake the cookies in the preheated oven until they spring back when lightly touched in the center, for about 10 to 12 minutes. Then, transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Cream together 1/3 cup softened butter, confectioners' sugar, milk, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and salt until velvety. Frost the chilled cookies generously.
