Butter-free dinner rolls with a light and pleasing texture and flavor.
Ingredients:
  • 4.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup shortening
  • 0.25 cup white sugar
  • 2.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions:
  • Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast in a bowl. Stir in the shortening until well incorporated, then add water and mix thoroughly.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 20 minutes or by machine for 12 to 14 minutes. Coat the dough with vegetable oil in a bowl, cover, and allow it to proof for 1 hour.
  • Shape the dough into 24 rounds and arrange them on a greased baking tray. Cover the rounds and allow them to proof for an additional 45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Bake until golden brown in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes.
