Quick and tasty Southern cheese grits are a delicious side dish for any night, casual or festive.
Ingredients:
  • nonstick cooking spray
  • 4 cups water
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup regular grits, uncooked
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1.5 cups grated sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or more to taste
  • 1 pinch paprika, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously coat a 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a pot over high heat, bring water and salt to a boil. Add grits, lower heat to simmer, and cook until tender, around 30 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine grits with a gradual addition of beaten egg, 1 1/4 cups of Cheddar cheese, milk, Worcestershire sauce, butter, pepper, garlic powder, and hot sauce. Mix well, then transfer the mixture into a prepared dish. Top with the remaining Cheddar cheese and a sprinkle of paprika for color. Cover before baking.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour until thickened and cheese is melted. Uncover for the last 10 minutes to let a golden crust form on top.
