1 hour 2 minutes
Gather loved ones for a fun and nostalgic taffy-making tradition.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
Instructions:
  • Prepare an 8x8x2-inch square pan by greasing it with butter. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a 2-quart saucepan. Add corn syrup, water, butter, and salt, then heat the mixture over medium heat until it comes to a boil, stirring constantly. Allow it to reach 265°F on a candy thermometer or until a small amount dropped into very cold water forms a pliable hard ball. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and then pour the mixture into the pan.
  • Once the taffy has slightly cooled, use lightly buttered hands to pull it until it becomes smooth, light in color, and firm. Pull into long strips that are 1/2 inch wide. Proceed to cut these strips into 1 1/2-inch pieces using oiled scissors for easier cutting. Wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap or waxed paper to maintain its shape.
