Decadent mac and cheese casserole with creamy sour cream, rich butter, and a blend of two Cheddar cheeses - perfect for any occasion in under an hour!
Ingredients:
  • 1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup butter, softened - divided
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (8 ounce) package shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 (8 ounce) package shredded mild Cheddar cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish by lining it with parchment paper.
  • 1. Boil a pot of water. Add elbow macaroni and cook until almost done, about 7 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and stir in 1/2 cup butter.
  • Combine butter, sour cream, cream cheese, sharp Cheddar cheese, and egg yolk in a bowl. Add flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, cayenne pepper, and milk to the mixture and stir well.
  • Spread a layer of 1/4 cup sour cream sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Stir the rest of the sour cream sauce into the macaroni. Pour the macaroni mixture into the baking dish on top of the sauce layer. Sprinkle mild Cheddar cheese over the casserole.
  • Bake until bubbly and cheese is gooey, about 15 minutes in the preheated oven.
