Make delicious apple and toffee turnovers for a twist on traditional pie.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 1/2 cups sliced peeled apples (2 small)
  • 1 tablespoon Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits (from 10-oz bag)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon coarse white sparkling sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and prepare a cookie sheet with sides or a 15x10x1-inch pan lined with cooking parchment paper or foil. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of flour and salt. Use a pastry blender or two knives to cut in shortening until the mixture resembles small peas. Gradually sprinkle cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, while tossing with a fork until the dough is moistened and almost comes together (add 1 to 2 teaspoons more water if needed).
  • Form the pastry into a ball and then flatten it into a round shape on a lightly floured surface. Roll it into a 12-inch round, about 1/8 inch thick, using a rolling pin, and transfer it to a cookie sheet.
  • In a medium bowl, coat the apples with 1 tablespoon of flour. Arrange the apple mixture on one half of the pastry, leaving a 3/4 inch border. Sprinkle the toffee bits over the apples. Fold the pastry in half over the apples, then fold and press the edges to seal with a fork. Brush the turnover with beaten egg, make 3 slits on the top for steam to escape, and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Bake until beautifully golden brown, then transfer straight from the oven to a serving plate. Allow to cool for 30 minutes before slicing.
