Elegant sautéed mushrooms and onions simmered in rich red wine and beef broth reduction, perfect for pairing with beef dishes or topping on steaks and crostini.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 pound button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil. Sauté onions until translucent, around 5-10 minutes. Stir in garlic and thyme, cook until fragrant for 2-3 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook until liquid evaporates, around 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the wine and broth into the pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and incorporate the sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid is nearly evaporated, approximately 1 1/2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
